The purpose of this book is to provide a systematic overview of robotics technologies applied to bioproduction tasks. The special design considerations and unique features of the robots used in various bioproduction systems are discussed. A coverage of robotics fundamentals is presented in a logical sequence, including the major components of manipulators, sensing elements, traveling devices, and reasoning algorithms, to aid the readers in understanding the underlying principles used in designing bioproduction robots. A larger number of example robotic systems developed for use in the open field, within controlled environments, and in the food industry are described. The monograph concludes with a presentation of the methodologies of systems approach and economic evaluation.
